Marie-Ana Follett - AYLP Program Coordinator
A native Bostonian, Marie-Ana’s work has primarily focused on educational empowerment and environmental justice. In 2011 Marie-Ana moved to Guangzhou, China as a two-year VIA Service Fellow at the Guangzhou English Training Center for the Handicapped (GETCH), teaching English, learning her students' stories, and getting better acquainted with the rhythm of life in China. She first became interested in disability issues after doing research on the cut-flower industry in Colombia in college, discovering that the communities in those areas had high rates of children born with disabilities.
Following her time as a teacher at GETCH, Marie-Ana’s worked as a producer for the feature documentary, EAT BITTER, TASTE SWEET 苦, 亦甜. The film is a coming of age story of three physically disabled young adults as they navigate Chinese society. In addition to the film, Marie-Ana has worked for Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth in Hong Kong and Cycle Canton as a tour guide in Guangzhou. In her free time Marie-Ana works on her badminton skills, tries out new Chinese recipes, and participates in environmental groups in Guangzhou.
